After almost 11 years in the same location we got our first protester today.A guy trying to sell dvds had just exited the building when we heard some sort of commotion outside. What ever and whoever causing the disturbance was out of our security cameras views. Not quite sure what to expect we all went to the front door.(We didn't know if the cops had stopped him or if he was fighting with somone or what.) A very dark skinned black muscular man about 6'2 was in front of our sign waving a bible.Great that is just what we need ,a slow day turned into a dead day!He toted a raggedy napsack and wore a white tank top tucked into the waist band of beige pants.I can't pin point exactly why but we all concluded he was homeless. As he turned to face us he seemed to eminate a hatred that made everyone except me and Carrie step back into the safety of the dim club.I put on a mask of confidece as I shuddered inside.Despite the wielding of a bible I sensed a violence bubbling inside this man.My shoulders pulled back and I held my head as high as I could manage while I gave him notice that he was on private property and I would not hesitate to call the authorities and have him arrested for trespassing. It took all my strength to keep my vioice from breaking and giving away my intimidation. He continued to recite biblical scripture and question why the city would let such a place exist as he retreated to the opposite side of the road.
The situation reached a peak as he approached stopped cars at the traffic light and even stuck his head into an open cab window bellowing his complaints. An suv with younger guys decided to taunt him by blowing their horn, waving and blowing kisses to the girls still at the door.I decided the scene would only get worse with the 5 o'clock rush hour rapidly approaching.
When I called the police dept. the dispatcher informed me an officer was already in route. It was only about 4 minutes when a young sandy blonde officer sped into our lot and stopped at the front door.He was very polite and conducted himself in a professional manner as he inquired about the man still across the street still yelling at the top of his lungs.
We stood just inside the entryway with the door cracked as the officer motioned the man to the edge of our driveway. He was a bit startled as the protester rushed forward still screaming and swinging his massively muscled arms wildly. The officer took a few steps backward, put his hand up to stop the wild man as he tilted his face sideways toward the radio attached to his shoulder and called for backup.(I'll take a moment to assure you this is completely true.I know earlier this week the whole Vest fiasco and the police at the grocery store thing must have you believing I am a fantastic liar.I'm not sure I would believe all this would happen in a week but I cross my legs and hope never again to orgasm and stick a dildo in my ear if i'm lying.)A second officer a older black man showed up about the time the protesting guy was doing the pelvic thrust and warning us to think of Jesus the next time we took off our clothes for money. It was really quite comical and I can only imagine what he would have been doing if he knew my girls rarely dance. They prefer to fuck, suck or jerk for their money (it comes easier and works up less of a sweat that way).Anyway they warned him he must stay across the street and cannot approach pedistrains or motorists or he would be locked up.The crazy guy got calm and said he was just waiting for his bus when he noticed us.The younger officer asked when his bus came and he gave a time about 5 minutes away. The officer advised him to get back across the street where the bus stop was.He obliged and took up his preaching again as he crossed the intersection. The cops then addressed us.They apparently have experience with this man and belive he has the potential to become violent very quickly. They didn't believe he was going to take the bus and were waiting to see.
The wildman was standing a few feet away from the stop and the bus passed right by. Apparently the cops were right(this time). The man bolted across the intersection with no regard for oncoming traffic and demanded the police do something to the driver that wouldn't let him on the bus.Again the officeers were respectful to him but very firm in their assertions that he move on or else.Although still complaing about the corrution that allowed us to exist and the bus to disregard him he started down the street and away from our building.(Boy, was he headed in the right direction. The area west of us is littered with street girls and young drug dealers.) We were warned again that he can be dangerous and should call immediately if we see him in the area again. The officers got another call and drove off very dramatically kicking up a cloud of dust behind them.
I have had my problems with police on several occassions. My experiences are not negative just because I have been on the "perpetrating" side but because they have exhibited behavior unfitting someone entrusted to protect and serve.Derogatory statements that are employed to humiliate and underscore us into believing we are second class citizens is deplorable and should never be tolerated in a (supposedly) civilized society.
Yeah, I love our justice system. Many people have tried to convince me I mustn't idealize it so and must accept some defeats will be based on prejudices and politics not the merits of the case.I simply cannot and will not do that. Those who are not part of the solution are part of the problem and should step aside while braver souls fight the battles for us little people.I appreciate their trying to save me money and heartache but I will not accept defeat without at least a fight.
My mother has a story she likes to tell that epitomizes one aspect of my character. In eighth grade I had a math teacher, I could not get along with. She called my mother in for a conference and told her I had more courage than brains. My mother was insulted but the truth often hurts.
